Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist that inhibits the movement of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle cells and cardiac muscle cells, like other calcium channel blockers, amlodipine lowers blood pressure by relaxing arterial smooth muscles, which decreases total peripheral resistance and therefore reduces blood pressure. Amlodipine is used in the management of hypertension and coronary artery disease. It was commercialised by Pfizer until 2007 when generic entered in the market.
