Gatifloxacin is an antibiotic of the fourth-generation fluoroquinolone family, that inhibits the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Fluoroquinolones are broad-spectrum antibiotics, effective for both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteri, that play an important rolein treatment of serious bacterial infections, especially hospital-acquired infections and others in which resistance to older antibacterial classesis suspected. Gatifloxacin is used for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, it was also produced it in eye-drop formulation. In many countries, gatifloxacin is also available as tablets and in various aqueous solutions for intravenous therapy.
